About Onyx Creative

Welcome friends! If you want to learn more about Onyx Creative, you’re in the right place. Here’s where we tell our story – or at least some of it.

Our story

Onyx Creative is a consultancy focused on self-care through creative expression. Our programs help mitigate stress and burnout through a comprehensive emphasis on the 8 dimensions of wellness. We offer safe space creative sessions for individuals, families, teams and corporations that educate, entertain and enhance lives.

We believe that everyone has value. We believe that everyone has a story to tell. We believe that everyone is creative. We believe that an untold story is the basis for many of our difficulties at home, in our communities and in our workforce. We access the value through the story that is told by tapping into the intrinsic creativity of each individual.

The telling of our stories accesses our value and strengthens our connection. The telling of our stories reduces the need for senseless aggression or fear of missing out. It reduces our need for unhealthy rivalry and increases our ability to work together.

Creativity is the vehicle. When we are being creative, we can be our true selves. We don’t have to stifle who we are and who we can be. We can reduce judgement. We can reduce oppression and unleash potential. We can create environments where the perceived necessity of these ills will fail to create angst. We can do this all by being our basic true selves – one authentic individual at a time.

Our Team

Ann-Marie Talley

“I remember this one particular Thursday. I needed to get to work by noon. My bag was packed, my lunch prepared. I knew I had to leave, but somehow I couldn’t get myself to do it. I was stressed, I mean really stressed. I felt a wash of anxiety come over me. My hands were sweaty, my feet were sweaty. My chest tightened, my stomach lurched. It was only a 15-minute ride, but I just couldn’t bring myself to go through that door to go to work. I found myself with thirty minutes to get there which is the time it normally took without rushing. I just didn’t know what to do.

I walked into my studio. The floor had just been finished and things were set up but yet unused. How had I ever denied myself the thing that gives me such joy? I reached out to a nearby blank canvas. I intuitively started with the color ultramarine blue – my go-to color. Inspired by a black and white picture of a tiger I had saved, I began. The process of creative expression allowed me a release for my anxieties about leaving the house. I had transferred that anxiety onto the canvas while creating something truly beautiful and healing that my heart treasured.

I did manage to leave the house and get to work in record time. Throughout the day, I was able to engage my coworkers and my clients. I had made myself emotionally available. I had acknowledged the feelings that were oppressing me and discovered a wonderful enjoyable way to explore and process them.“

About Ann Marie

Ann-Marie Talley was a stressed and burned-out counselor. At her time of discovery of The SelfCare Addict, she was also a mother, a former soldier and military wife. Thankfully, she was also an artist. Ann Marie was like so many others, caught up in the workaday world dealing with the stressors of having to balance it all with life. It had been years of listening and sharing the challenges of countless others, navigating the bureaucracy that came along with working for a large and complex organization, all while envisioning new and innovative ways to help people that proved challenging to implement within the confines of her then current reality. It became clear to her that a change was desperately needed.

Ann-Marie knew that the people with whom she came in contact needed something more. The people she met every day and her family needed more. She knew that she needed more.  The more we all needed was to allow ourselves to be ourselves – our true, valuable, beautiful, authentic selves. She decided that her life mission would be to share the very thing that helped her access, process and express her emotions. She knew that this would be life-changing for her and the multitudes that she would eventually reach.

Ann-Marie understands the needs of the workforce because she understands the needs of the individuals that that comprise it. She focuses on each individual from the entry level to the C Suite. Her knack for accessing the essence of human needs in collectivity is healing for the individuals and the collectives in which they find themselves.

From a Partner’s Prospective

“I often refer to Ann-Marie as “the visionary.” She can see things that need to be when it comes to self-care – things that many of us have been too afraid to acknowledge for far too long. Our fear of facing the realities that her work brings to light allows the darkness to grow and connections to be severely damaged. She lends us her courage. She can see the Big Picture of what needs to be addressed and adjusted in the fabric of our society and still have a patient, focused, compassionate ear for the individual.

Ann-Marie has a gift for emotional healing – not simply like the skills of the trained counselor that she is, but more like that of a learned individual human being with a breathtaking knack for reaching into our dark spaces, grabbing our hand and saying, “Beloved, it is time.” (Sonya Ruffin, Onyx Creative)

Ann-Marie’s Philosophy

Among her many functions at Onyx Creative, Ann Marie Talley guides the safe space paint experiences. Her unique blend of tough love and deep compassion creates valuable opportunities for participants to be their authentic selves and to let their various emotions come out to play while exploring their innermost needs.

The SelfCare Addicts poses the question “What if we had Human Capital Insurance?” The question itself exemplifies her passion to revolutionize the workforce by focusing on the simple yet critical and foundational truths that we have far too often chosen to ignore.

Meet Ann Marie Talley, The SelfCare Addict. You’re welcome.

Sonya Ruffin

“My career journey has had some sharp twists and turns. I was burned out in the workplace. I was the one that would come in early, stay late, meet every deadline and spit polish every project. I really believed that more education, longer work hours, being a stickler for detail and always keeping many balls in the air was the answer to making my career life better. I consoled myself with the notion that “eventually it would all pay off.” Eventually someone would notice how hard I worked and how often I delivered in excellence. Truth is, I was exhausted, confused, frustrated, and undervalued. There never seemed to be a moment to exhale. There was always some other uber-urgent objective that allowed no time for celebration of past successes. This simply was not working and somewhere deep inside I had known it all along. No amount of professional perfectionism was going to change my situation – make me feel like I was serving my unique God-given purpose with my life.

The warning signs were there. I couldn’t think clearly. I had anxiety. At work, I was simply tired and sad. The construction industry was taking a dip in Nevada and our numbers at the firm were dropping dramatically. Lay off was imminent. I knew I had so much more to offer than would ever be accessed within those walls.”

About Sonya

Sonya Ruffin designs things. She writes things. She helps people be their authentic selves. Most of all she enjoys helping others access the value in their lives. Her diverse experience helps Onyx Creative make a deep and lasting impact.

Sonya worked in public relations, corporate communications and marketing for many years. She was accustomed to spreading other people’s stories. The only thing is that the story she wasn’t telling was her own.

From a Partner’s Prospective

“When I met Sonya she was a breath of fresh air to my thunderstorm ⛈ of chaos. Sonya somehow manages to do with words and graphics what I do with canvas and paint. We are both uniquely talented for storytelling through our perspective media. She carefully takes each word choice into account in the telling of the story and pours her heart and soul into capturing the true vision of her charge – all the while captivating and delighting her audiences. As for me, I wait impatiently and with great anticipation to read her latest work.

Sonya is like lightning to produce the quality that I have come to expect. My impatience comes from the fact that her work is so good that I can hardly wait to see what’s next.

It may be hard to believe, but not so long ago, Sonya questioned her reasons for her love of graphic design and written expression. She, like so many in the workplace, found herself in situations in which she was undervalued, over-used and under-praised for her talents and dedication.

So, when I tell you that you’re in great hands when it comes to your message and stories, I mean just that. It is because I have witnessed first-hand the phenomena that is Sonya Ruffin.” (Ann-Marie Talley, Onyx Creative)

Sonya’s Philosophy

Sonya has always had a heart for the hurting – especially those that look like they are fine but hurt in silence She wants to make a difference. She became a volunteer lay counselor at her church. It was an amazing, exhausting experience that strengthened her resolve to help others along their journey to themselves.

She met a remarkable young lady named Ann Marie Talley. Her intelligence, energy and vision were the breath of fresh air that she needed. They vowed to support each other and a partnership was born.

“We had so much in common that it was scary. We shared our stories. We connected on a level that I had never expected. Ann Marie reminded me to play, to experience more of my own life. She didn’t seem to have the inhibitions that clouded my perspective and held me hostage. She accepted me right where I was. She helped me give myself permission to be. ”
